Patio TV Mount Ideas
Let’s set the scene for you. It’s a gorgeous early October afternoon, not a cloud in the sky, the temperature is absolutely perfect on your patio (thanks in part to the outdoor ceiling fan providing a constant breeze). Your best buddy is relaxing on a lounge chair next to you and the table between you has the important job of holding up a truly massive (and still sizzling) plate of nachos. You look down at the water slowly dripping off the cold one in your hand (whether that cold one is an icy soda, smooth-as-silk beer or, for you hipsters, craft-brewed beer). With the click of a button, your 65” 4K outdoor television roars to life, bringing your favorite football team in all its glory right onto your patio or deck.
Wait… watching TV on your patio? It’s a thing, and those in the know will tell you that whether it’s the fabled afternoon bro-football-spectacular or an early evening rom-com with your spouse, watching TV while enjoying the great outdoors is about as good as it gets. Whether you’re looking for a 49” TV to catch you up on the news in the early morning as you sip coffee and watch the dew dissipate on your grass or a 65” beast ready to bring the gridiron into your own back yard, outdoor televisions are our favorite enhancement to your patio oasis.
Can I install a TV on my outdoor patio?
Heck Yeah! Like most things, selecting the right option revolves around a few variables that you should consider first:
- Comfort is job 1. When figuring where to place your TV, try to keep it about eye level for the people who will be viewing it. A TV over an outdoor fireplace looks amazing, but your guests will need to develop giraffe-sized necks (not a good look in a polo shirt) to comfortably watch it. Think about your placement.
- TV’s abhor severe heat. By severe we mean anywhere that a heat source ends up melting your precious outdoor TV, like near a grill or too close to a fireplace. We’ve seen it happen – it’s a really bad day when your specialized outdoor TV becomes a paperweight because of poor placement.
- Throw some shade. If you have multiple TV mounting options available to you, choose the one with the most shade. You know how hard it is to see your phone in bright sunlight… imagine a REALLY BIG phone screen in that same sunlight. Darker is better.
- Logistics. Can you get power safely to the TV (and a streaming box if you need one)? Do you need your cable TV cable to reach your outdoor TV? Make sure you have the infrastructure in place.
Which outdoor TV is right for my patio?
Level up
Levels? We don’t need no stinkin’ levels! Actually, you do… you’re going to have one level or another, so it’s important to understand the difference in outdoor televisions levels:
- Full Shade TVs – Internal components are guarded from intruders like bugs, but their screens have minimal anti-glare qualities and their exteriors aren’t protected, making them best suited for fully shaded areas like under a roof. Because they have little protection from moisture intrusion, these are suited for only for dry areas.
- Partial Sun TVs – Internal components are guarded from bugs and now include internal weatherproofing, and there is some attention paid to slightly higher brightness levels and anti-glare screens. Intended for use under cover only, they’re fine with some misting or fog.
- Full Sun Outdoor TVs – This is the big leagues for outdoor TVs. Internal components are protected from bugs and weatherproofed, and include external protections to prevent moisture and corrosion, handle greater extremes in temperature, and have recalibrated displays that optimize brightness and contract to combat glare. Perfect for pergolas or other areas where ceilings are not available and handle both bad weather and full sunlight with ease.
IP, man…
Most electronic things that are potentially exposed to the elements have been tested and rated by an international standards organization called the International Electrotechnical Commission. This commission designates an IP rating (stands for Ingress Protection) that has two figures (like IP54)… but don’t think of the rating as “54” but rather “5 and 4.” The first digit designates how well the product protections against intrusion from dry things like dust, dirt and bugs, while the second digit reflects how well it guards against water and moisture. Both these digits are rated from a 1 (no protection at all) to a 7 (completely sealed). The best you could possibly hope for is for the product to be rated IP77. Don’t forget that it’s not just your TV that has an IP rating, the remote for your TV does too.
Do you need a special mount for an outdoor TV?
Yup. The only major distinction your mount will need is for it to be weatherproof. Most TV mounts are made of steel for strength, the difference is in the coating on the steel. Some mounts sidestep the coating issue by being constructed of non-rusting aluminum. With that in mind, there are multiple mounting options depending on where you want your TV, and your viewing angle…
- Wall Mount Fixed – Your TV will be glued to the wall in a specific (flat) position
- Wall Mount Tilted – Still flat’ish against the wall, this mount allows you to tilt the screen up or down slightly to combat glare
- Wall Mount Articulating – Mounted on the wall, your TV can extend outward and swivel left-and-right to a comfortable position
- Ceiling Mount – There’s a pole attached to the ceiling, and the TV mount at the end of the pole can swivel up or down to give you the proper viewing angle. Perfect when there’s no wall in sight.
- Floor Mount – Also known as pole mounts, there is a bracket that attaches to your patio/deck floor which holds up the TV mount.
- Extensions – If you have selected your ceiling or floor mount and the TV still isn’t at the right angle, pick up an extension pole to add as much as 2’ to your mount to get your TV at the perfect height.
4 great TV mounting ideas for securing your outdoor TV
1. Wall mounts are a classic choice for outdoor television sets
Wall mounting your TV at eye level is the optimum viewing experience, and with the stunning clarity of the Furrion Aurora FDUP49CBR 49” 4K partial sun outdoor television you’d think the experience couldn’t get any better… And then it does by significantly enhancing the sound by adding the Furrion Aurora FSBNN3MSR-BL outdoor soundbar with built-in subwoofer.
2. Or install a wall mount on a large column
Large, decorative columns (like the stacked stone column in this patio tv mounting idea) scream to be the focal point of your patio, and with the addition of a Furrion Aurora FDUF43CBR 43” 4k full shade outdoor television with its companion Furrion Aurora FSBNN3MR-BL outdoor soundbar you’re sure catch every play of the game in style. With full 4K resolution, auto-brightness control and a weatherproof remote, even the kids watching (dare I say it?) Peppa Pig will look awesome!
3. You can even install a stylish wall segment specifically for your outdoor TV
If you’ve got a drop-dead-gorgeous view (like the one in this patio tv mount idea) it would be a shame to build an entire wall just to house your television. Instead, build a small wall segment on which you can easily hang the Furrion Aurora FDUP55CBR 55” 4K partial sun outdoor tv and its companion Furrion Aurora FSBNN3MSR-BL outdoor soundbar with built-in subwoofer to gather the family for movie night with +3 style points!
4. Add a sleek, subtle, high-quality speaker beneath your mounted TV for better sound quality
I’m one of those guys who enjoys a good picture in a movie, but it’s the sound that really gets me! Clarity and finely directed sound in the Furrion Aurora FSBNN3MSR-BL outdoor soundbar with built-in subwoofer will make your movie nights pop! Supporting up to 70W of clear and powerful sound, this Bluetooth-enabled powerhouse is designed to work in conjunction with Furrion Aurora televisions.
Cover Your Outdoor TV
Finally, once you’ve got exactly the right tv in the perfect position (with a beast of a soundbar to match), be sure to take care of your TV by adding a TV cover designed for your system. You’re not just protecting from dust and rain, but insects, birds and small critters (not to mention those dive-bombing bird poop squads that seem to have it in for us). Just make sure to get an outdoor TV cover that fits the size of your TV.
Having an outdoor TV really is a game changer… whether you’re enjoying the rarity of time alone to watch the game or getting TV-addicted teenagers to enjoy some fresh air, an outdoor TV will open up new worlds of possibility to your home relaxation.
