The Best Mister for Your Home
As the dog days of summer set in, people choose to spend as much time outdoors enjoying their patio and deck spaces as possible… but that blazing sun can become a problem. Excessive heat will frequently send little ones (and their caretakers) back indoors simply to get in the air conditioning, even when they would prefer to be outside. By adding patio misters to your outdoor living space you can cool down all day long.
How Misters Can Make Your Patio Welcoming
A mister uses fine spray nozzles to emit water vapor into the air, and your family is cooled down when the water touches their skin. Outdoor misting fans perform this magic by way of evaporative cooling – when water goes from a liquid (mist) state to a gas (evaporated) state, it can absorb a large amount of heat (that can lower temperatures by as much as 30°F).
Because the water droplets on your skin evaporate and cool the skin, the smaller the droplet the quicker the evaporation (and the cooler you’ll feel). This evaporative effect can be dampened (pun fully intended) by higher humidity levels, so misters function at their best at humidity levels between 40 and 80 percent.
You might think that throwing tiny droplets of water into the air in case it hits your skin is an inefficient system, but you’d be wrong. Evaporative cooling is remarkably energy and water efficient. In fact, a mister uses roughly a fourth of the water that it takes to create the electricity for an air conditioner to have the same effect. Besides, your kids will love the misters every time they walk in front of them.
There are other benefits to using a patio mister… If you have plants nearby, the mister will efficiently water them for you (in fact, misting system can use up to 70% less water than traditional irrigation systems). Water misting fans also clean the air by capturing airborne dust, allergens and pollutants. Outdoor misting fans also repel insects like mosquitoes, flies, bees and wasps. With all these benefits, installing a patio mister is a no brainer.
Choosing Which Mister is Right for You
Now that we’re sure that an outdoor misting fan is a solid choice for keeping your family cool during the dog days of summer, we have to take a look at the different kinds of misters available. Review each one and consider your specific home or business needs before moving forward. As always, we have the best patio consultants available to help you out if you run into obstacles.
- Low-Pressure Misters – These water misting fans operate on your main household water supply (typically 40-60 psi), are the cheapest misters to purchase and operate, and can easily be installed by homeowners. They don’t produce as fine a mist as medium- or high-pressure misters, and the larger droplets won’t cool your family as quickly or as much as higher pressure systems. Again, because of the larger droplet size these outdoor misting fans leave behind the most residual moisture and won’t work as effectively in humid climates.
- Medium-Pressure Misters – By using a pump to boost your home’s water supply pressure (to between 160-250 psi), medium pressure patio misters produce a finer mist which reduces the surrounding temperature quicker and more effectively and won’t leave as much residual moisture. Installation is almost as easy as low-pressure systems, typically requiring the pump to be plugged into an electric source and the water supply tubing to your household water supply… but they’re more expensive to purchase and operate.
- High-Pressure Misters – Most often seen in commercial settings, these outdoor misting fans use large and powerful misting pumps to significantly boost the water pressure (some over 1,000 psi). They produce an ultra-fine mist which cools the surrounding area rapidly and powerfully, leaving the least amount of residual moisture. These water misting fans are quite expensive and consume considerably more electricity while running. Because of their size and intricacy, they frequently require professional installation (which is why they are typically used as commercial water misters).

Styling Your Outdoor Space with Misters
You’ve taken great care to shade your little ones from the incessant beating of the sun’s rays – you’ve got a cantilever patio umbrella over your dining area and a shade sail over the shallow end of the pool so the little ones don’t fry to a crisp. Currently you’ve got two of the bigger ones playing cornhole and three crumb crushers playing some version of hide and seek… not under any of the shading protection you have provided.
Looking in the other direction, your spouse is hard at work on deepening their tan by lying face down on your chaise lounge chair. And snoring. Lots of snoring.
These unshaded areas are perfect for a patio misting solution – keeping your family cool while they enjoy the sun at the same time. Lowering their perceived temperature by as much as 20° by selecting Fogco misters, Ecojet by Joape misters or Mist works misters would be the perfect solution for this situation.
Misters Enhance Your Outdoor Living Time
Cooling your family during the summer months is a challenge outdoors, as the little moppets don’t seem to want to stay in one place in the shade. Weird. The best way to cool down your active family is to provide tiny droplets of water to do their evaporative magic by installing an outdoor misting solution.
